Hi,
I'm fairly new to composting, & I'm wondering if fruit pits are good/ bad/ or indifferent for my compost pile. At the moment it would be cherry, peach, or apricot pits. If they're OK for composting, should I bash them with a hammer to start breaking them down?
Pat
Are fruit pits OK for compost pile?
They will break down over time although the harder the material, the longer it may take. Busting them up would help speed up the process.
I don't try to compost hard pits because they take so long to break down.
I throw those things in with the rest of the fruit waste- it hasn't been a problem to me. Peaches have sprouted so I have saved two to see how they do as trees for me.
I burn mine, then sprinkle the ashes around my banana tree.
I have been pulling peach and apricot pits out of an old compost pile. They must be thirty years old. There is no sign they are breaking down.
