I cured some pale yellow stripes on the leaves of one fig tree by doing both, so I don't know which worked (dumb of me). You can also play with some fertilizers that have lots of trace minerals. Figs are so tolerant, it's hard to remember to take care of them. When you scatter the fertilizer, lime or Epsom salt, remember the roots are very shallow and grow out away from the trunk, maybe 5 to 10 feet.
