Come October many of my non spring blooming rebloomers put up stalks. I never got around to cutting them down as many continued to flower into December. Today it warmed up and felt almost spring like so I went out in the garden and pulled weeds (where there wasn't snow) and trimmed back the hapless stalks. The heartbreaking discovery is that the more I cleaned up, the more clumps I discovered that were pregnant but never got a chance to send up stalks because of the snowstorm that came up that nasty weekend in December just before Christmas. All of them were pregnant! Several were summer trades that I got specifically because they were rebloomers. I was so happy to be in the sun and the soil but that made me feel bad. What are the chances that the clumps will put up stalks come spring? Roni Picture is of raised rebloomers' bed after replanting in July 2009 |
