Clematis shouldn't be pruned until late winter/early Spring..to make more zonal sense out of that...do it when you first Prune your Roses for Spring or when you see the Forsythias in bloom...that will work regardless what zone you are in..another thing is to take into account which clematis group you have so you can learn how to properly prune them..If it was a Clematis "Ramona"..it shouldn't be pruned since it is a pruning group 2 and if you need to prune to "shape" or "Keep in bounds" then it should only be done After it's bloom period..Some Clematis get "Withered" leaves this time of the year but those that are pruning group 2 and 1s will put out new leaves at the leaf axil come spring....so, if you know the name we can give you some advise..I also have a pic where I hard Pruned if you need to see it..that is done for the Viticellas aka Pruning group 3s...Jeanne
