Good guess on the upright sticks jb-but no; they are ADD's-- Anti Dog Devices LOL! This motly crew of neighbor pooches frecuents the yard and apparently have no affinity for my poor trillium. The trillium are planted a few feet from the maple trunk you see in the background- fair game for wandering paws.
( plus I leave a pile of sticks there after they die back, for the very reason you guessed.)
