Last September I ordered 2 Chestnut trees and planted them in December.
They partially survived the nasty Feb. freeze and 4\" of snow although I
did have to cut them back. Today I noticed one has damage as if being
eaten. See pix. While taking the images, a small worm managed to
transfer to my phone case - green and ~1/4\" long - from the 12\" tall
tree. I had closely inspected but had not seen this worm.

I sometimes get a 1\" long worm on my Mountain Laurel and use Spinosad to
spray the foliage. Would this be the right chemical to use on our
Chestnut? Or something like Sevin dust? I got a message from the seller to not use chemicals (fungicides, herbicides, ect).
