A friend asked me to look after their cactus recently. I asked them if they'd be okay with me repotting it and they said that'd be fine.
It's obviously in the first pot it was sold in, and roots are growing out of the bottom. Is it still okay to repot this mid-summer when it'd have been best to repot back in spring?
Also, I find it very difficult to tell whether the soil is dry enough to water since there are more roots than soil. Usually I use a meter that I stick into the soil but it's so large compared to the soil here I'm worried it'd break the structure apart. How should I go about measuring moisture if I don't repot?
Additionally, I googled a bit and came to the conclusion that this might be Ferocactus gracilis since the spines are somewhat red and the other traits match too (not clearly visible in photos), can someone confirm?
