Beginner Gardening: Are these closed Petunia blooms "spent"?, 1 by kristinah

Can I pinch the closed ones in the photo, and how do I tell new from old blooms? If they are closed and the others are open, does that mean they are spent, even when there is still color on them? Have been gardening for years and I know to pinch off the seed pods from the curled and brown blooms, but have never been able to tell whether to pinch the closed ones.
