I think a descent mulching would get them to survive in your area. I even got A. pallida to survive outside in the rock garden. I know they grow them in northern Norway! The key is to plant the tubers below the frost line. Around here, if I plant them 6 " deep, they are OK. I even get dahlia and glads to survive overwinter by planting them deep.
