Slugs abound, always have and always will, but snails are newby's. My only thought was that they came in with some perennials from a nursery, probably in '04, or were dropped off in the middle of the night by aliens. Morning pick-ups and bathing them in a pail of salty water seems to do the job. Perhaps a necklace of shells (empty of course) would be pretty.
