Linda, we've grown Fallopia japonica 'Variegata' for years and never had a problem with it being invasive. We have it growing in both deep shade and in full sun. In the shade it retains the bright variegation but tends to get a little leggy, not as dense. If I had the time I'd probably whack it back in early summer to keep it shorter and more shrubby. In the full sun it loses some of its variegation but grows like a shrub and the flowering in the fall is spectacular.
