We believe we have the Corythucha celtidis (Hackberry Lacebug). I found the fellow walking on me while I was indoors. Hunting through images online, discovered the species that looked like this could be one of several. But of the trees that they feed on, we only have the Hackberry.

Lacebugs belong to the order Hemiptera, True Bugs. These insects are plant eaters with piercing and sucking mouth parts.

I do not find this bug to be a pest because our tree is full grown, planted long ago. It is home to many bugs, but it is also a diner for most of Iowa's woodpecker species, plus Nuthatches, Wrens, Warblers, etc. I gladly take the bugs on my plants as I am rewarded with a variety of God's feathered creatures and predatory insects.
