I've photographed this butterfly in Brownsville and Harlingen - both in extreme south Texas (Cameron County). The male is an iridescent blue and the female is checkered brown to gray with both having black markings. Lime green eyes.
The larval host is suspected to be Screwbean Mesquite (Prosopis pubescens) - also known as "Tornillo" - because the bean pod is tightly wound resembling a coil.

I have a butterfly book and it states that the Blue Metalmark reaches the U.S. only by the county of Cameron of the state of Texas. It is an uncommon butterfly. I found it on my Tropical Milkweed. It stayed on it for about 10 minutes then flew away.
